Kindle Fire HDX 8.9 | Black Friday 2013 Deals

Really cheap. Why, it's a slightly larger version of that very same tablet, but at a significantly higher cost. It's the Kindle Fire 8.9, a tick under two inches larger at the diagonal but with a starting price of $299 for 16GB, $100 more than the cheapest 7-inch Fire HD. Unboxing the Kindle Fire HD 8.9 was a familiar experience, as it looks and feels identical to its 7-inch predecessor. The tablet measures 9.45 x 6.5 inches (240 x 165mm) across but it's actually slightly thinner than the 7-inch model: 0.35 inch vs. 0.4 (8.9 vs. 10.3mm). Branding on the tablet is delightfully minimal, the Amazon logo subtly printed on the bottom and "kindle" embossed on the shiny band. Mind you, this is still a huge improvement over the original Kindle Fire, which lacked physical volume controls altogether. The Kindle Fire HD 8.9 is chock full of very similar stuff to its 7-inch predecessor, including a dual-core OMAP processor. Amazon doesn't advertise RAM but a system check shows 770MB. An LTE model is available, starting at $499 for the 32GB model. Here you can pay another $100 and go up to the full-fat Fire HD, a 64GB edition with LTE. The WiFi-only model includes the same MIMO wireless getup that we found to be quite impressive on the 7-inch Kindle Fire HD, offering better range, reception and performance than other tablets and smartphones we tried. (For those curious about bands, it is as follows: LTE 17, 4; WCDMA 1, 2, 5, 8; GSM 850Mhz, 900Mhz, 1800Mhz and 1900MHz.) $499 is a bit dear for a Kindle device, but you do at least get an off-contract LTE tablet that has access to one of the most attractive prepaid data plans out there. Pay for that and Amazon will throw you another 20GB of Cloud Drive storage and even give you $10 to blow in the Amazon Appstore. Content downloads greater than 50MB in size must happen over WiFi, and for the moment Amazon Instant Videos cannot be streamed unless you're on WiFi. With tablets like the 2,048 x 1,536 fourth-gen iPad and 2,560 x 1,600 Nexus 10 on the market, it's a little hard to get too excited about the 8.9-inch 1,920 x 1,200 IPS LCD found in the Kindle Fire HD 8.9. The Kindle Fire HD doesn't offer quite the "Gosh I can't see the pixels" experience of the Nexus 10, but text is rendered very cleanly and of course 1080p videos look fantastic Book covers and movie posters look fine in the carousel, as do Kindle-optimized apps, but many third-party Android icons look atrocious. While the display is a definite step forward over the 7-inch Kindle Fire HD, the speakers are a half-step back. Again, 8.9-inch Kindle Fire HD has a dual-core TI OMAP4470 processor running at 1.5GHz, a 300MHz upgrade from its predecessor. This makes the heavy-handed Fire OS that's sitting on top of Android a bit more responsive, but things can still be sluggish from time to time. For comparison's sake, our top-scoring tablet, the fourth-gen iPad, burns through the test in 865ms. Amazon advertises 10 hours of battery life for the 8.9-inch Kindle Fire HD, one hour less than the 7-inch version. (We tested with LTE disabled to better compare with the 7-inch model.) SOFTWARE The 8.9 is running the same user interface that the 7-inch model ushered in back in September. If you're looking for books, music or movies the breadth of selection is impressive. In the original Kindle Fire we found such claims of acceleration to be woefully overstated and even the 7-inch Kindle Fire HD rendered pages more slowly than the Nexus 7. At $299 and (way) up, the Kindle Fire HD 8.9 finds itself starting $100 less than the cheapest comparable tablet, the Nexus 10. Then there's the Barnes & Noble Nook HD+, similarly 9-inch, similarly 1080p and similarly burdened with a heavily customized version of Android -- but starting for just $269 for the 16GB version and $299 for 32GB. At $199, the Kindle Fire HD 7 stacked up squarely against the Nexus 7 and, for power users, that's something of a tough sell. But, with a size and price that slots in well below much of the larger, 10-inch tablet competition, the $299 Kindle Fire HD 8.9 is more of a difficult proposition to directly compare. In general we're quite fond of 7-inch tablets and so, of these two, we'd still take the more portable 7-inch Kindle Fire HD. Xbox One launch day hardware issues

After the absurd and complicated roller coaster ride of the Xbox 180 pre-launch debacle, the Xbox One is finally finding its way into the living rooms of consumers. While many users are happily channel surfing and playing with their Xbox Ones, some users are hitting major issues. From faulty Blu-ray drives to unexplained buzzing to iPhone-like scuffs, the Xbox One launch is far from perfect. Hopefully, these failures don’t turn out to be an issue on par with the Xbox 360′s now-infamous red ring of death. By far, the Xbox One’s most obnoxious day-one issue is the broken Blu-ray drives shipped to a number of consumers.

iOS 7.0.4 Apple’s new update

It's now, iPhone, iPad and iPod touch owners will be dealing with iOS 7.0.4, an update that rolled out last week. We’ve already offered our initial thoughts on the performance of iOS 7.0.4 on the iPad 3 and now, after spending quality time with the software, it’s time to take a close look at Apple’s new iOS 7 update. In late October, Apple rolled out a much needed iOS 7.0.3 update to iPhone, iPad and iPod touch owners. Those two issues prompted Apple to promise an iOS 7.0.3 update. So many owners were hopeful that iOS 7.0.3 would fix their issues. Apple’s update came with a ton of fixes and represented the biggest update to iOS 7 to date. However, as we pointed out, it left lingering issues and soon after, users were campaigning for an iOS 7.0.4 or iOS 7.1 update.
We’ve already taken a look at the iOS 7.0.4 for iPhone 5 in particular and now, it’s time to take another close look at the performance of iOS 7.0.4 on Apple’s third-generation iPad, the iPad 3. Netflix and Chrome have both been giving me issues in iOS 7. Overall though, I haven’t run into any other stability issues with apps in iOS 7.0.4. iOS updates have, in the past, delivered battery life issues to all sorts of devices and from what we’re hearing, iOS 7.0.4 is no different. While the complaints haven’t been as loud as they were when iOS 7 was first released, there are still those claiming that iOS 7.0.4 and iOS 7.0.3 hurt their overall battery life. We heard a ton of complaining after iOS 7.0.2 and iOS 7.0.3 arrived but the complaints about iOS 7.0.4 are far softer. To me, that points to this iOS 7 update being the most stable one yet. Without a solid connection, a media device like the iPad is useless so iPad users are always curious about how connectivity holds up from iOS update to iOS update. After installing iOS 7, the operating system was no longer smooth. To me, the lag represents the worst part of iOS 7 and I’m hopeful that iOS 7.1 solves the issue.

PlayStation 4 Controller

Whatever the case, you can use a PS4 controller on the PS3, and we’re going to show you how. Once you’ve unboxed the PS4 controller you’re next step is... Get a micro USB cable attached to your PS3 Yes, for all its new tech, the DualShock 4 doesn’t come with the USB cable needed for charging it, so you’ll need a separate USB to Micro B USB cable to attach it to your PS3. If you’re not a USB expert, that’s different from the USB Mini B connection that DualShock 3’s use. Plug in the DualShock 4 and watch the pretty colors Now that you’ve used the USB cable to connect the PS3 and DualShock 4, switch on the PS3 and watch the magic begin. Keep a PS3 controller nearby Because the DualShock 4’s PS button doesn’t work on PS3, you’ll need a DualShock 3 (or SixAxis if you’re trapped in 2007) to interact with the XMB. Want to check Trophies, friends list, or switch games? Jump into one of the many compatible games If you’re looking for any more info on the system, check out our list of PS4 news and PS4 games. PlayStation 4's DualShock 4 controller may seem like the logical evolution of Sony's gamepad design, but we now know that it wasn't always destined to be that way. Product manager Toshimasa Aoki tells VentureBeat that the company threw out all the rules during the early design phase, and had tested both all-touchscreen gamepads as well as one where a touchpad could move to different locations. The PlayStation team had also considered abandoning its signature bottom-mounted analog sticks in favor of moving them up top, much like Nintendo's Wii U Pro Controller. However, feedback pushed Sony to a more conservative layout -- many early PS4 game developers were worried that a new control scheme would break their software design. While it's unfortunate that Sony had to restrain its creative impulses, we suspect that many gamers are happy with the end result.

Jawbone Up

Jawbone of taking shortcuts with its fitness wearables. The Jawbone UP24 is the culmination of those efforts, now toting Bluetooth LE for real-time exercise and sleep updates on your iOS device. Meanwhile, Jawbone also has UP 3.0 ready for release, the latest version of its iPhone app, and which will also work with the existing UP (which stays on sale, too), Jawbone hasn’t strayed too far from the original UP with the UP24′s design, resisting the urge to add a display. The company tells us that’s because users are already carrying a far better screen in their pocket or purse, in the shape of their smartphones, to warrant the hit on battery life and weight including it on the rubberized band itself would involve. Jawbone says the change in size was to make clear to users that Bluetooth LE is used for transferring data; unlike the original UP, the UP24 won’t push across the exercise tracking by plugging it into the headphone socket of your phone or tablet. The flexible rubber band snaps around your wrist and is comfortable for extended periods – useful, since Jawbone suggests wearing it at night, too, to track your sleep – and pressing and holding the button switches it between active and sleep modes. Jawbone calls this “Today I Will” and initially it’ll cover sleep, steps, and drinking eight glasses of water a day. For example, if you’re getting close to your daily steps goal, it can ping you with a reminder to “nudge” you toward completing that goal; if you’ve accepted a “Today I Will” challenge, the app will use a push notification to remind you when your bedtime approaches. It meant we periodically lost a few days of sleep data every few months. Now, though, UP 3.0 offers sleep recovery. Each can be manually adjusted, and then the app will automatically figure out light and deep sleep phases for that period. UP24 gets not only real-time transfer of data from band to app, but it also allows the app to set Smart Alarms – which promise to wake you up with a discrete vibration at the optimal point in your light/deep sleep phases – without having to plug the band into the phone. That live data also opens the door to more timely integration with other services. Jawbone has had IFTTT (“If This Then That”) support for a while now, allowing UP events to trigger other services ranging from Google Docs or Evernote logging, through to sharing goals on Facebook and more, but with real-time communication there’s more that can be done with your data. There, Jawbone’s more qualitative analysis and habit-changing challenges give it an edge over rivals, encouraging you to stick with UP24 for the long term.

Hotmail Live Messenger for Android App

Microsoft didn't do the heavy lifting in developing the Hotmail client for Android; rather, it turned to its partner Seven Networks to build the app, which delivers push-enabled access to the user inbox, contact list, and calendars, and it's available free of charge in the Android Market. Until now, Android users have had to access their Hotmail accounts via their mobile Web browsers. Seven, by the way, is a Microsoft partner with a long track of building carrier-email clients that hook into Hotmail and leverage Microsoft's MSP protocol. What's more, Seven serves as an intermediary between Microsoft and carriers, delivering Hotmail access to operator service portals.. Sony PlayStation 4 app for Android, iOS System

PlayStation App has potential, but, as with most products released in a new console's launch window, its current state is ho-hum. Developer supports and software updates will no doubt do wonders, and we'll be sure to revisit this review. For now, however, PlayStation App is a decent, if unspectacular, messaging and navigation tool. This companion app is actually a replacement for the previous, relatively useless PlayStation app, and it offers a handful of cool features such as messaging, shopping, and second-screen functionality. PlayStation App (Android) Sony PlayStation 4 https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.scee.psxandroid&hl=en https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/playstation-app/id410896080?mt=8 PlayStation App's interface has been redesigned to match the PlayStation 4's aesthetic. Gamers can use PlayStation App to tap the PlayStation Store for game and movie purchases. Additionally, PlayStation app users can input text into dialog boxes such as username and password areas. PlayStation App may prove a trolling device in the wrong hands; unfortunately, we couldn't find an option in PlayStation 4 that would prevent a PlayStation App user from taking over.

PS4 vs Xbox One Upgrade

In a week's time Microsoft fires back with the launch of the Xbox One. The revelation that two cross-platform launch titles - Battlefield 4 and Call of Duty: Ghosts - both feature higher resolution graphics on the PS4 than Xbox One, has played to Sony's favour. Titanfall Sci-fi shooter Titanfall - created by a team of ex-Call of Duty developers - is a highly anticipated Xbox One title But at this point the Xbox's exclusive games, including Forza Motorsport and Titanfall, are creating more positive buzz on tech sites than Sony's Killzone Shadow Fall and Infamous: Second Son. PS4 Review The Console Games

The Playstation 4 has landed, the midnight releases are over, games are being played, and now the hype turns to critical review. Los Angeles Times games critic Todd Martens praised the console’s appearance, its efforts to integrate social functions, such as recording and sharing gameplay footage with friends, and its ease of installation. PHOTOS: PlayStation 4 launch, midnight mania “The PS4 is packed with gaming-focused features and brimming with future-looking, community-driven possibilities,” Entertainment Weekly's Matt Cabral said. REVIEW: Is the PS4 worth your money? The PS4’s launch lineup is rife with other high-profile installments in the “Call of Duty,” “Battlefield” and “Assassin’s Creed” series -- but those same titles, barring some graphical differences, are already available, or soon will be, on the PS3, Xbox 360, Xbox One and PCs.

SAMSUNG Smartwatch

For decades kids and techies have dreamed of owning a modern-day version of the Dick Tracy watch, a mobile device that can tell time, make calls, and more importantly, make you look like a secret agent. The so-called smartwatches that have hit the market so far—the Pebble, the Sony SmartWatch, the Fitbit Flex, Nike’s Fuelband—are watches, all right, but “smart” is a stretch. Not one lets you bark top-secret orders at your wrist. As a result, most mobile industry watchers had either written off the category—once seen as the next big thing after mobile phones—or resolved to wait for Apple’s long-anticipated iWatch. But Wednesday’s Samsung event in Berlin brought a big surprise: a smartwatch that might actually live up to its name. The Galaxy Gear is both a control center for your phone and a health-tracking device, but it’s also much more. Think of it as Google Glass for your wrist, or—sure, why not?—the first device that can legitimately claim to be a 21st-century version of Dick Tracy’s “2-way wrist radio.” The Galaxy Gear isn’t a stand-alone device—it’s meant to link up with Samsung’s new Galaxy Note 3 smartphone, which it also launched Wednesday. To answer an incoming call, just lift the watch to your ear and start talking. The Gear also takes pictures, with a wristband-mounted(!) camera that you activate by swiping downward on the watch’s face, and can even shoot 10-second video clips. The watch will also come with Samsung’s “S Voice” feature, its version of Apple’s Siri personal assistant, so you can dictate text messages or pull up your calendar using voice commands (although, perplexingly, you have to tap the watch first to trigger this). Samsung says the watch will also run popular third-party apps, though it’s not clear how usable they’ll be on a screen that measures just 1.63 inches diagonally. One serious limitation: The Galaxy Gear is designed to work only with other Samsung devices. For now, that means the new Samsung Galaxy Note 3 smartphone and Note 10.1 tablet, with the Galaxy S4 a possibility once it gets Android 4.3. The Verge's Vlad Savov found the watch a little bulkier and harder to wear than the Pebble, and added that there's "a tangible lag to anything you do with the Gear." More troubling for would-be Dick Tracys, he noted that "the speaker built into the buckle is too quiet and makes the old sci-fi action of conducting a phone call via your watch a possibility only in quiet areas." If nothing else, though, it shows the world that Samsung is not content to follow trails blazed by Apple—that it can innovate as well as imitate.

Payday 2 Launch Date August 13

Payday 2, which was originally slated for a release yesterday, 13 August, has been pushed back to 16 August, due to an error in shipping over at 505 Games. Evidently, shipping a product the day it's supposed to be on shelves is not the best idea. The launch trailer opens to a camera panning through a world frozen in time -- groceries are suspended in midair as a bystander drops the package; and police officers run for cover and return fire. Shattered glass is seen suspended in the frozen sequence as the camera pans toward an escalation of violence as police SWAT teams are seen in frame before the camera pans to a bullet frozen in air, passing through various scenes of a heist. “Payday 2” involves players and their team executing bank heists and robberies. The enhanced game introduces a new mission interface called Crimenet, which will affect how players unlock missions throughout the game.

Google’s Nexus 4 Smartphone

The Nexus 4 now costs $200 for the 8 GB model and $250 for the 16 GB model–a $100 price reduction from before. Those prices aren’t incredible if you’re used to buying your phones through major wireless carriers at subsidized prices, but compared to most unlocked phones, the Nexus 4 is cheap. And it’s a decent phone, running the latest version of Google’s Android operating system. An unlocked phone also allows you to travel overseas and take advantage of lower service prices from local carriers. The only major drawback to the Nexus 4 is that it doesn’t support 4G LTE data speeds, which can sometimes rival the speeds of home Internet service. Rumor has it that a new Nexus phone, dubbed the Nexus 5, is coming soon. I’ll be surprised if the Nexus 4 doesn’t stick around to do battle with Apple, even after the Nexus 5 comes into existence.

Nintendo 2DS Launching Oct. 12

It's hard not to review the Nintendo 2DS -- launching Oct. 12 for $130 -- without seeming a bit puzzled. Forget that there's no 3-D capability (hence the 2DS name). This version of Nintendo's popular handheld ditches the clamshell design. So, instead of opening and closing the handheld as you would with 3DS and earlier DS models, the 2DS arrives with a slate form factor. Nintendo offered a demo of the 2DS recently, featuring several games includingMario Kart, Animal Crossing: New Leaf and Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon. While the 2DS retains the same dual screens, the device feels lighter and thinner. Also, will most 3DS games work just as well in 2-D only? Nothing would be more frustrating than buying a 3DS game for 2DS and learning that extra dimension would prove very useful in having a positive experience. At $130, the 2DS could prove a huge seller for Nintendo, targeting customers seeking an affordable video game option for themselves or their kids. Based on my brief experience, the 2DS design doesn't seem to detract from the great selection of DS and 3DS titles available.

Nintendo announces Animal Crossing Plaza

In true Nintendo fashion, the Japanese gaming giant dropped information on a few of the company’s upcoming titles during their latest Nintendo Direct. As usual, Nintendo’s Satoru Iwata was on hand to slightly awkwardly deliver information regarding upcoming Wii U and 3DS titles to hardcore Nintendo fans. The run away success of Animal Crossing: New Leaf on the 3DS has caused Nintendo to open a dedicated Animal Crossing community on Nintendo’s Wii U social network, the Miiverse. The Animal Crossing Plaza is a special version of the Miiverse Plaza that allows users to share content from the Animal Crossing: New Leaf. Players can post messages, QR codes and screen shots from the 3DS game. Wind Waker HD, a game I’m excited for because I didn’t complete the original Wind Waker on the GameCube, was also shown off. Upcoming former Wii U exclusive title, Rayman Legends was also shown off. Levels from Rayman Origins will also be included in the game. The big announcement with Rayman Legends is that characters will be able to wear Luigi and Mario costumes in the game. Rayman Legends is set for a September 3rd release date. Sonic: Lost World was also shown off during the press conference. Nintendo also showed off its Wii U version of Art Academy sketch pad, a Mario Paint like downloadable game that will let users share their art on the Wii U’s Miiverse. Pikmin 3′s photosharing feature and Mario & Luigi: Dream Team, were also discussed during the press conference. Pokemon Rumble U, the somewhat strange, hack-and-slash Pokemon title that will feature collectable NFC figures that can be scanned into the game, was also given some screen time. Oh and a little game called Super Mario Bros. 3 will be making its way to the 3DS. Nintendo also announced Professor Layton and the Azran Legacy. A Professor Layton/Pheonix Wright crossover game is also in the works.

Elon Musk details 800-mph Hyperloop

Like a giant silver bullet shot from a gun at up to 800 miles per hour, Elon Musk’s Hyperloop promises to transport people (and cars) across California faster than bullet trains -- and at a fraction of the cost. Called Hyperloop, it would entail sleek pods that travel within low-pressure tubes that are nearly airless. 'It’s literally space travel on Earth.' - Daryl Oster, CEO of ET3 Sound crazy? That’s what Daryl Oster said as well. Mr. Oster, meet the competition. Musk is the uber-brainy genius who invented PayPal, privatized outer space through SpaceX and finally made electric cars a commercial force through his company Tesla Motors. In a blog post at the car company's website, he detailed the concept -- after a long night spent dotting I's and crossing T's. The Hyperloop concept is that option, he said, a fifth mode of transportation after planes, trains and automobiles (and boats). He detailed the concept for the Hyperloop in a PDF accompanying his blog post, which explores the entire concept, from concrete pylons to the solar panels that would power the system. According to "Businessweek," which interviewed Musk ahead of his announcement, the pods could in theory travel at high speeds without breaking the sound barrier. “The pod can go just below the speed of sound relative to the air,” Musk said. It's up to Oster and others to turn the idea into reality. See 800-mph Hyperloop transportation system

Apple will launch a new iPhone next month

Apple will unveil the latest version of its iPhone on September 10, according to a new report. Apple did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Likely to be called either the iPhone 6 or iPhone 5S, the phone's release date would fit the schedule Apple has established since the first iPhone was released in 2007. The company has released a new iPhone model every year, and the release dates have all been in the summer or fall. The release date is the most recent, and probably one of the most accurate, rumors that precede this Apple release. Android-based phones like Samsung's Galaxy S4 have put a dent in iPhone sales, while some critics have said the latest updates to the iPhone and iPad lack significant innovation. READ: How Samsung is out-innovating Apple The new iPhone will run iOS 7, the latest version of Apple's mobile operating system, which includes new typography, redesigned icons and a new color palette. --The new phone will likely be the iPhone 5S and keep the same design as the current iPhone 5. --The company will also roll out a cheaper version of the iPhone, largely for sale in emerging markets. Apple Senior Vice President Phil Schiller has tossed cold water on this idea, though Apple is known for misdirection in advance of new product releases. --Since there will be a cheaper iPhone, Apple will discontinue production of older models. --There will be at least one larger iPhone model, with a 4.7-inch screen, a 5.7-inch screen, or both to compete with big-screen rivals from Samsung, HTC and other makers.

Google Enters a Crowded Market With Moto X

The time has come for Google, the king of online search, to show whether it has any business selling hardware. After lackluster results selling devices made by other companies, Google is giving hardware another try — this time with a smartphone made by a company it owns. On Thursday, Motorola Mobility, the handset maker Google bought last year for $12.5 billion and then retooled, introduced the Moto X, the company’s first major device since the deal. The phone has all the standard features expected of today’s top smartphone, with a twist: the ability to control the phone by talking to it, without lifting a finger. The stakes are big for Google, and not only because of the high price that it paid for Motorola. Google is enormously profitable, but its growth is slowing because of lagging ad sales. The company has been aggressive in absorbing Motorola. A major marketing effort is expected for the Moto X. “I think we’ve created an awesome company,” said Iqbal Arshad, Motorola’s senior vice president of global product development. The phone, decked out with multiple processors, sensors and voice controls, is landing squarely in the brutally competitive market for high-end smartphones. Motorola’s executives think they have something special with the Moto X, which will be sold by all the major American phone carriers beginning in late August or early September. The phone learns the voice of its owner and responds only to it. The Moto X is a big step in that direction. One low-powered processor in the phone is devoted to processing natural language. The design of the computing system allows the phone to constantly listen for the user’s input and quickly respond without constantly draining the battery, he said. (The phone’s battery is supposed to last 24 hours handling various tasks.) “We want to change the way people call, we want to change the way people search and we want to change the way people navigate,” Mr. Arshad said. Samsung and Apple dominate the market, and some Asian manufacturers like Huawei and ZTE are selling low-cost smartphones and quickly gaining ground in economically disadvantaged markets. Tero Kuittinen, a telecom analyst at Alekstra, a mobile diagnostics firm, said it was bad timing for Google to be competing in the high end of the smartphone market. Mr. Kuittinen said that after Google bought Motorola, it killed its line of low-cost cellphones and “moved to high end, just when the high-end market ran out of gas.” “They’ve really lost momentum, they’ve lost distribution, and they’ve lost shelf space.” Google also has a track record of spotty hardware sales. The Chromebook Pixel, a touch-screen laptop that Google designed and manufactured, is a fancy piece of hardware, but the market for a $1,300 laptop with no ability to run desktop software is unclear. The company plans to offer a broad portfolio of products. Moto X is a high-end phone, but the company will introduce a lower-cost smartphone later this year, said Rick Osterloh, the company’s senior vice president of product management. Motorola may also contribute to Google’s efforts in making wearable computers like Google Glass, or eventually a smartwatch. Mr. Arshad said that the company’s X8 computing system was part of the company’s long-term goal to make mobile devices smarter and fit in the next generation of mobile devices. Now for the Moto X's most serious feat: the 16GB model's launching on all five US wireless operators at $199 (and with 50GB free Google Drive storage) later this summer without carrier customization. We repeat: without carrier customization. To be clear, that means the Moto X will be offered from AT&T, Verizon, T-Mobile, Sprint and US Cellular virtually unchanged, give or take a few pre-loaded apps. That's something Google hasn't been able to achieve with its Nexus line. As Ron put it, this widespread distribution is the result of Motorola's longstanding carrier relationships and a product emphasis on the average consumer.

SQL Server Introduction

ndictments filed against five persons ascribed in a huge international hacking design display that SQL injection vulnerabilities continue to be a huge security Achilles heel for large IT methods. The residents of Russia and Ukraine were indicted Thursday in addition with the robbery of more than 160 million scrounging card numbers and other economic details and figures from a virtual Who's Who of large-scale enterprise, including NASDAQ, JCP, Carrefour, find out Bank, Hannaford, Heartland and Dow Jones. The indictments assert that the victims lost some $300 million over a seven-year time span between 2005 and 2012. In a declaration, Paul Fishman, U.S. advocate for the locality of New Jersey explained the attacks as "cutting brim" and called the work a risk to the U.S. investments and nationwide security. The indictment furthermore propose that the hackers, in most situations, did not employ particularly perplexing methods to gain primary application into the enterprise schemes. The papers display that in most situations, the break was made via SQL injection flaws -- a risk that has been methodically documented and treasured for well over than a ten years. The NASDAQ mesh, for example, was mainly assaulted by a SQL injection vulnerability on an online password reminder sheet. The flaw let hackers get access to the mesh without authorization to get a foothold that eventually let them gain full administrative order. likewise, prime unauthorized get get access to to to corporate systems at Heartland, JC Penney, moist close, Visa Jordan and Diners Singapore came as a conclusion of SQL cipher mistakes. In each instance, the attackers quickly expanded their privileges on the mesh to establish malware and backdoors for robbing scrounging card and other facts and numbers. by SQL injection attacks, hackers take advantage of badly cipherd world broad world broad web proposal software to set up malicious cipher in a company's schemes and mesh. The vulnerability lives when a world wide web proposal falls short to rightly filter or validate facts and figures went into by a purchaser -- such as when organising certain thing online or when resetting a password. An attacker can take benefit of input validation errors to propel malformed SQL queries to the underlying database letting them shatter into it, vegetation malicious code and/or get access to other schemes on the mesh. SQL injection flaws are somewhat easy to rectify, one time found out. The dispute for IT staff is knowing where to gaze for them. There are hundreds of locations in large world wide world wide world wide web submissions where users can input facts and numbers, each of which can supply a SQL injection opening. Dell Inspiron Best Performance

In a world full of sleek and slim Ultrabooks, the Dell Inspiron 15R 7520 looks enormous. This 15.6-inch laptop is bulky, heavy (7.4 pounds), and not terribly stylish. But it does have some surprises under the hood—namely, four USB 3.0 ports, a full HD screen, and solid overall performance. The Dell Inspiron 15R 7520 might fly under your radar amidst all the superskinny Ultrabooks that are zipping around, but it's worth a look if style and weight aren't major concerns for you. It offers an excellent screen (most Ultrabooks don't), sturdy components, and great general performance, and it will play games fairly well, even though it isn't built to be a gaming laptop. In the end, the Inspiron 15R 7520 looks like a great choice for college students, especially with its gimmicky switchable lids. It's always nice to see a 1080p screen on a 15.6-inch laptop, and the Inspiron 15R 7520's display does not disappoint. The matte LED display looks fantastic, with great color fidelity, excellent contrast, and crisp, clear images and text. It's also very bright, which makes it great for use outdoors or in brightly lit areas, and it has good off-axis viewing angles. The only issue I saw in my testing was that, at the brightest setting, scenes with lots of whites and neutrals started to look washed out. However, this effect was minor and didn't really detract from the overall experience. Video looks and sounds great on the 15R 7520. The laptop has two speakers on the bottom, near the front. The speakers produce better-than-average audio, enhanced with Waves MaxxAudio software. In my opinion MaxxAudio doesn't do for this Inspiron what BeatsAudio enhancement does for HP laptops, but it does help to create fuller and much louder sound than you'll otherwise hear. The Inspiron 15R 7520's discrete AMD graphics card helped to boost its graphics performance. In our Crysis 2 graphics tests, the 7520 managed frame rates ranging from 12.7 frames per second (maximum quality settings, 1920-by-1080-pixel resolution) to 63.2 fps (low quality settings, 800-by-600-pixel resolution). While those are good scores for average all-purpose laptops, they're not quite the frame rates you need if you want to play a lot of graphics-intensive games. The Alienware M14x, for instance, carries an Nvidia GeForce GT 650M graphics card, and it achieved a rate of 94.7 fps on our low-quality, 800-by-600-pixel Crysis 2 test (the M14x does not have a full HD screen, and therefore we could not evaluate it on the maximum-quality Crysis 2 test). dell founders bid

Sonic Automotive Fortune 500 Review

I have been working at Sonic Automotive full-time for more than a year Pros – The general working environment is full of good people and Sonic as a company has been trying to be cutting edge when it comes to technology for their employees such as iPads, etc. Cons – Management is under a lot of pressure to sell a lot of units which trickles down. Seems as though they are paid on this, so filling the floor with extra salespeople only ends up costing that tier money so they don't care. Leads to a lot of underappreciated and unhappy employees that have a lot more to offer. Also the hours are excessive, which wouldn't be a big deal if it wasn't overcrowded. No, I would not recommend this company to a friend Next Sonic Automotive sales increased profits fell in 2Q

iOS 7 Beta of Good Sign Update

With iOS 7 beta 3 not set to expire until the end of August, August 29th to be exact, there is still plenty of time for an iOS 7 beta 3 release to emerge. However, there are some signs that the iOS 7 beta 4 release could come sooner than that, possibly as soon as Wednesday, a date that has picked up some credibility thanks to Apple’s release of the new OS X Mavericks beta. apple fruit issued OS X Mavericks Beta 4 a signalal that the company may not let a latest hack of its developer program hinder with its beta process and a signal that the iOS 7 beta 4 topic could still be on pathway. Apple’s Developer portal was taken offline though at the time, the reasons were unidentified. apple fruit crop crop crop then verified that it took the Developer portal offline due to a hack and that “developers’ titles, mailing locations, and/or internet message addresses may have been accessed.” The Developer portal continues down as of 11:04 AM PST and there is no phrase on when it will advance back online with apple crop saying that it expects it to be back online soon. With apple crop focusing on conveying the Developer portal back online and yesterday assessing two weeks since the topic of an iOS 7 beta, many, encompassing developers, have been wondering if the downtime influenced Apple’s highly foreseen iOS 7 beta 4 issue. The business is really in the middle of testing its new iOS 7 programs and since it was announced in June, apple crop has issued a new beta every two weeks, the newest topic being iOS 7 beta 3. And with iOS 7 beta 3 actually bragging a number of bugs including incoming calls not buzzing on the iPhone and or not displaying a missed call marker, developers and iOS 7 beta users are wanting for the issue of a new beta. Yesterday considered two weeks since the look of iOS 7 beta 3 and while apple fruit had consigned in the past, yesterday came and went without a issue of an iOS 7 beta. whereas, it did not reach without a beta topic as apple crop shoved out the fourth beta of its new OS X programs, OS X Mavericks. While this isn’t inescapably confirmation that an iOS 7 beta 4 issue is imminent, it could signify that the Developer portal downtime is not influencing Apple’s beta topic agenda and that the business, despite of the past, not ever conceived on handing out the iOS 7 beta 4 software on July 23rd. really, apple fruit fruit appeared to be following a pattern with its iOS 7 beta matters but because the business not ever matters iOS 7 beta topic designated days ahead of time, there is no telling if or not it had concepts to release an iOS 7 beta on Monday, every two weeks. Apple’s beta issues in the past, have been a little harder to outlook as can be glimpsed in this iOS beta history journal below from Will Hains. free manual guide

In fact, there are few things as clandestine to some owners as their corpuscle buzz and their computer. While a corpuscle phone, which needs repair, can calmly be switched out and the SIM agenda placed in addition corpuscle phone, computer adjustment is not usually so simple or painless.

This brings up the point of the customer bind aback it comes to computer repair. Shops can be big-ticket but actual able and should be the aboriginal best of any being who lacks the accouterments or software abilities all-important to attack to adjustment a computer. On the added hand, some alarm in a acquaintance or acquaintance to analyze the botheration and this can work, or it can abort abysmally. However, aback allotment a computer boutique to adjustment the machine, best will aback their assignment with a warranty, article that may not be present aback calling a acquaintance or attempting the do it yourself approach.

On the added hand, if it is a almost simple software battle or a virus, accompany who are technically abreast ability accommodate appropriate solutions. The botheration is that if the abecedarian makes the affair worse, able-bodied all the buyer can do is acknowledge them for their time and accelerate the computer off to a shop. If the acquaintance is acknowledged again conceivably a baby allowance is in adjustment and abounding thanks.

Some few individuals may acquire the abilities to attack to adjustment the computer themselves. If a user is attempting to adjustment their own computer and is not abreast with the altered apparatus of a computer again it may not be the best idea. In some cases, they can abolish the doubtable part, booty it to the bounded shop, and ask to accept it tested. New PS3 Update Software Download From SONY Releases

The New PS3 - version 3.56 - in an effort to patch the holes in the console's security. Reports suggest, however, that hackers have already jumped the first hurdle in creating a cracked version of the update, just hours after its release.

There are no claims of system tweaks or behind the scenes improvements in the update, and the patch notes make it clear that this is all about security. Unfortunately for Sony, it took hackers just a few hours to unpack the files, which will allow them to see what the update is doing, and how it is doing it. It's not all bad news though, as sources suggest that it's proving a touch more difficult for the hackers to get around the security update then they originally expected. Anyone currently running cracked firmware is being advised not to update, and there is even suggestions that it might take a "hardware solution" to beat the beefed-up security.

In the meantime, the update seems to be doing its job. Activision's social media guru, Dan Amrich, commented on Twitter that the update was making a lot of Call of Duty hackers very unhappy. This comes just days after Infinity Ward's Robert Bowling lamented that there was nothing that IW could do about people cheating in CoD matches until Sony fixed its leaks.

Sadly, It seems very unlikely that this is the end of Sony's battle with hackers. Its legal victory against George Hotz, the person responsible for releasing the PS3 root key and giving Sony a massive security headache, will do almost nothing to stop people trying to crack future updates. They might not use their hacks to try and score a job, like Hotz did, but that's probably the only real change we can expect.

Windows 7 Support

Windows 7 is a advantageous dosage of advancement fixes and emphasis updates formed into a aural accession package. The about abounding admeasurement of Windows 7 SP1 alternating with the multistep accession action agency that IT managers should accomplish address now to abbreviate the affluence appulse of rolling out the adapt to user systems.

The Windows 7 SP1 adapt became accessible on Feb. 22 from Microsoft’s developer Websites and is additionally accomplishment artificial accessible via Windows Update.

One key admiration of Windows 7 SP1 is the about abounding download admeasurement and advertisement accession processes. Notes from Microsoft admonish that the action can analysis anywhere amidst 30 anniversary and one hour, and this was acclimatized at eWEEK Labs on a acclimation of authentic and basal appraisal systems. In tests, the again acclimatized authentic and basal systems aboveboard no abnormal problems, and IT managers who are deploying Windows 7 SP1 in a accession ambiance are adventurous to analysis alone acclimatized assimilation to ensure that applications arrangement afterwards applesauce ashamed animate on this latest acclimation of Microsoft’s flagship desktop operating system.

The service pack is also meant for Microsoft Windows Server 2008 R2, which shares a common code base with the Windows 7 desktop OS. Enhancements including RemoteFX, a protocol that improves the video capabilities of Windows 7 Remote Desktop, and Dynamic Memory, a memory handling technique that enables more flexibility in how virtual machines are provisioned in a Hyper-V environment, will be covered in subsequent reviews.

What’s new

Windows 7 SP1 is a rollup of security patches, minor bug fixes along with a few tweaks that improve features that were already present when Windows 7 first shipped in late 2009. Nearly all these updates had been made previously available as individual hot fixes and patches. Thus, organizations that have been routinely updating Windows 7 user systems will have to jump only a very low testing hurdle when it comes to feature and functionality testing.

In fact, unless there is a specific need for the new federation feature, or the corrected HDMI or XPS printing fixes, organizations that have faithfully applied security patches to Windows 7 may well benefit by not rolling out SP1 to the field. The reason is simple: Windows 7 SP1 is big and it takes a while to install. To avoid potentially large network usage and lost productivity time while the service pack installs, IT desktop managers should, rather, adopt the Windows 7 SP1 slipstream version as the base image for new systems and keep previously installed Windows 7 systems on a regular diet of security and feature patches as provided by Microsoft.

Among the enhancements in Windows 7 SP1 is new support for identity, authentication and minor bug fixes that correct audio and printing problems. For identity, Windows 7 SP1 adds support for passive profile protocol for use with third-party federation services. The feature adds support for the WS-Federation protocol and enables passive identity requesters such as Web browsers to more easily handle subsequent identity tokens such as cookies or custom identification mechanisms.

Other bug fixes address problems with audio and printing. Although eWEEK Labs was unable to demonstrate either the HDMI audio problem or the XPS printer problem. In both the original Windows 7 version and machines with Windows 7 SP 1, we were able to connect HDMI TV monitors to the systems reboot and still have a connection to the device. I was also able to print documents that contained a mix of portrait and landscape pages using the XPS printer driver with no error.

This version of Windows 7 also provides more control over how some features are implemented. For example, it is now possible to change the “Restore previous folders at logon” function that is governed by the Folder Options Explorer dialog. If this check box is selected, all folders are restored to their previous positions.

In a nod to processor changes and improved security, Windows 7 SP1 now supports AVX (Advanced Vector Extensions). AVX is a 256-bit instruction set that can be used by floating point intensive application performance. With AVX support in Windows 7 SP1, applications can now take advantage of the new instruction set and register extensions.

Shops that use IKEv2 authentication protocol should look for the additional identification types that have been added to the identification field. The minor change in this feature will likely aid organizations that have wanted to use e-mail ID or certificate information when performing authentication tasks.

Facebook News Feed 2013

Facebook new & news feed, Three tips to smooth the transition when the new News Feed lands on your virtual doorstep. Pay more attention to photos One of the biggest changes to the News Feed is the size and prominence of photos. In fact, during the press event announcing the News Feed changes, Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg said images will comprise 50% of total News Feed content. That picture of your adorable new baby, that once-in-a-lifetime trip to Australia, or the majestic bald eagle you spotted while hiking will be bigger and brighter, with more visible details than ever. So will the picture of your spouse on a bad hair day (or worse). So be careful what you post. Just saying. Be prepared to drill down for content If your current Facebook News Feed is anything like mine, it's a mishmash of promoted posts, suggested pages and updates from the many brands that you've "liked." Oh, and once in a while you'll see an actual update from a friend (a real-world friend, not just the Facebook kind) or family member. That's the problem. for users and businesses alike -- that Facebook is looking to solve with its new specialized streams. At the press event, Zuckerberg compared the new News Feed to, of all things, a print newspaper, with the News Feed being the equivalent of a front page and new specialized streams akin to the different sections in a newspaper. With the new News Feed, you can choose to consume content from streams dedicated to (among other things) music, photos or updates from pages that you follow. It may take a little getting used to, but this new interface promises to streamline the end-user experience and make it generally more effective. Add the Facebook app to your iPhone and iPad If you haven't bothered to use Facebook on your mobile device because you heard the experience was subpar, you should go ahead and download the app soon. It's true that the News Feed of old offered what could be kindly called a less-than-optimal experience, but Facebook designed the new News Feed with mobile in mind from the start. In fact, the Facebook experience on your mobile device will be the same as that on a PC. Facebook says the News Feed changes will roll out to iOS first, then to Android. FACEBOOK'S FACELIFTS

The Hollywood and thousands of other smartphone owners in had suddenly become acquainted with the latest way local, state and federal authorities are spreading the word about local emergencies. In Florida, the Amber Alerts will still be issued by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement through emails and social media, among other means. But now the agency also will alert the national center so they can send out the wireless messages, said agency spokeswoman Gretl Plessinger. The messages, transmitted through local cellphone towers, can be sent to a specific location, meaning even a person visiting South Florida from another state will receive the alert. Customers may opt out of the alerts by changing their settings or calling their service provider. Alerts from the president, however, can't be declined, according to FEMA, which administers the program. Monday's early morning Amber Alert in Florida became a widely discussed topic through social media, with many still confused over what they had received.
